Botox Q & A
How Does Botox Remove Wrinkles?
Whenever the muscles in the face contract, the skin directly above the muscles will wrinkle in response. Over time, these wrinkles can become ingrained in the skin and can appear even when the muscle isn't contracting. Botox weakens the muscles that it's injected into, making those muscles be unable to contract easily. This results in the reduction or elimination of wrinkles in the skin.
What is in Botox?
The active ingredient in the Botox formula is a neurotoxin made by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. This neurotoxin, botulinum toxin A, is approved by the FDA for use in the face for the purpose of wrinkle improvement.
What Type of Wrinkles Can Botox Treat?
Botox is used primarily in the glabellar lines, the vertical lines between the eyebrows. It is also often used to correct horizontal forehead lines, which means the whole forehead can be wrinkle-free with regular Botox treatments. Many people also opt for Botox in their crow's feet, the lines that span out from the eyes. Smoker's lines around the lips or "marionette lines" at the edges of the mouth can also be corrected with precise placement of Botox. Botox can even be used for a mini brow lift in some cases.
Are There Other Products Similar to Botox?
Yes, Dermatology of Boca offers 2 Botox alternatives. Both Xeomin and Dysport have the same main ingredient as Botox, botulinum toxin A. All 3 products work in a very similar way to relax wrinkles. The main difference with Xeomin is that it contains no additives and doesn't require refrigeration. Xeomin may be a good alternative for patients who develop a resistance to Botox. All 3 products can be very effective wrinkle relaxers.
What is the Cost of Botox Treatment?
The cost of treatment depends on the number of areas being treated and the degree of wrinkling present, as this determines the number of units needed. Most patients need around 20 to 40 units per area, but a touch-up may require much less.
How Long do the Effects of Botox Last?
The effects of Botox last for anywhere from 3 to 6 months. If patients have follow-up treatments on a regular schedule, they'll often be able to wait longer between treatments. Once the Botox is established and the wrinkles are gone, touch-ups may only be needed once or twice a year.
