Who does the removal matters
Tattoo removal has become sophisticated, with specialized lasers designed to remove the ink from your skin efficiently. You need to go to a knowledgeable and experienced team who can evaluate your tattoo and give you the best treatment possible.
Here at Dermatology of Boca, Dr. Jeffrey Fromowitz MD, FAAD and his associates offer tattoo removal with the Enlighten® Laser. This enables them to remove tattoos of all kinds, including professional, amateur, medical, and cosmetic tattoos.
The equipment
The equipment your doctor uses is just as vital as the doctor you choose. Dr. Fromowitz uses the Enlighten Laser for all of his tattoo removal procedures.
This industry-leading technology is the first system on the market to deliver both picosecond and nanosecond pulse durations. This creates the ideal blend of light wavelengths for tattoo removal.
The adjustability of the Enlighten system means that Dr. Fromowitz can tailor the laser light to the particle size of the ink. You benefit by receiving a more complete and faster clearance of your tattoo.
What actually happens?
The first step in the removal process is an evaluation of your tattoo, where Dr. Fromowitz evaluates the condition of your tattoo and creates a treatment plan.
At your session, you wear a pair of protective glasses as the the doctor shoots a high-intensity beam directly into the tattoo pigment. He adjusts the laser settings to address the type of pigment used, and the light causes the pigment to break apart into smaller pieces. With each succeeding session, those particles break into pieces of decreasing size.
When the particles become small enough, your body naturally absorbs the ink and eventually eliminates it. This is a harmless process and is what causes the tattoo to disappear.
Each session takes about 15 minutes, but it will vary depending on the size of your tattoo.
What does it feel like?
We’ve all heard someone say, ‘the removal hurt more than the tattoo.’ While tattoo removal isn’t completely pain-free, it has improved over the years. Now, most people equate it to feeling a rubber band snap on their skin.
If you start to feel discomfort, we can apply a topical anesthetic to relieve any discomfort. You can also use an ice pack on the area after treatment to soothe any soreness.
How many treatments do you need?
The number of treatments you need depends on the size and intricacy of the tattoo and the pigments used, as well as your skin type. Traditional laser treatments required as many as fifteen sessions. With the Enlighten laser, you can see a noticeable improvement in as little as three sessions.
Dr. Fromowitz will discuss the condition of your tattoo and how many treatments you will likely need during your consultation.
What is the aftercare like?
Your skin care is not complete when you leave the office after treatment. You need to avoid UV exposure to the treated area. This means staying out of the sun and tanning beds. You should also avoid putting lotions on your skin.
Your skin just experienced exposure to laser light, so be kind to it. Exposing it to the sun or other UV light will cause can cause discoloration and unwanted developments such as irritation.
